  7. This document provides complementary or late-breaking 
  8. information to supplement the documentation. You can 
  9. also look at the InDefense Web site for the latest 
  10. information (www.indefense.com).

  13. HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT
  14.  
  15. Readme.txt is located in the Achilles'Shield setup directory.
  16.  
  17. To print Readme.txt, open it in Notepad or another 
  18. word processor, then use the Print command on the 
  19. File menu.
  20.  
  21.  
  22. WHAT IS ACHILLES'SHIELD?
  23.  
  24. Achilles'Shield is an advanced Internet security 
  25. protection application specifically designed to stop 
  26. new viruses and malicious code. It can be used alone, 
  27. as the only virus and malware protection, or it can be 
  28. used together with a leading anti-virus scanner and 
  29. provide "protection between updates," when the scanner 
  30. does not yet have the new virus's code in its database.
  31.  
  32. Achilles'Shield stops viruses, Trojans and worms by 
  33. their distinct behavior, not by their signature code, 
  34. and, therefore, it does not have a database of 
  35. anti-virus signatures that requires updating. Because 
  36. it can be used as added protection, if you have a scanner, 
  37. we recommend you keep it alive.

  41. loading Achilles'Shield on computers with other antivirus 
  42. products.

  45. TO INSTALL THIS SOFTWARE
  46.  
  47. 1. After extracting the program files to your 
  48.    hard drive, run the SETUP.EXE program.
  49.  
  50. 2. Follow the instructions in dialog boxes.  A 
  51.    typical installation will install to the 
  52.    C:\Program Files\InDefense\Achilles'Shield directory. 
  53.  
  54. 3. Reboot the machine after installation. 
  55.  
  56. 4. Report problems as follows:

  63. PRODUCT COMPATIBILITY
  64.  
  65. WeÆve tested Achilles'Shield and leading 
  66. antivirus scanners running on the same PC and 
  67. found it compatible with McAfee VirusScan 4.0, 
  68. Norton AntiVirus 5.0, PC-Cillin 6.0, InnoculateIt 5. 
  69. We continue to perform compatibility tests and will 
  70. publish the results on our website (www.indefense.com).

  73. DUAL-BOOT INSTALLATION
  74.  
  75. To install Achilles'Shield on a dual-boot PC you must
  76. specify separate installation directories for each
  77. Operating System (OS).
  78.  
  79. To share the report file and/or temporary 
  80. directory, use the Achilles'Shield Options application
  81. that is located in the Achilles'Shield Start Menu folder
  82. (Default is Start->Programs->Achilles'Shield->Options).
  83.  
  84. To share the same data files between the different 
  85. OS's requires manual registry modifications. This
  86. is not necessary if you do not want to share the
  87. data files between the different OS's.
  88.  
  89. WARNING: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can 
  90. cause serious problems that may require you to 
  91. reinstall the OS. InDefense, Inc. cannot guarantee that 
  92. problems resulting from the incorrect use of the
  93. Registry Editor can be solved. Use the Registry 
  94. Editor at your own risk.
  95.  
  96. For each OS, execute the following steps:
  97.  
  98. 1) Run REGEDIT.EXE (i.e.: Registry Editor) from 
  99.    the Start->Run menu.
  100.  
  101. 2) Navigate to 
  102.    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\InDefense\InDefense\3.0\Macro.
  103.  
  104. 3) Modify the key value "Precert" to a fully 
  105.    qualified filename that is available to all OS's.
  106.  
  107. 4) Modify the key value "RestPlace" to a fully 
  108.    qualified filename that is available to all OS's.
  109.  
  110. 5) Modify the key value "Storage" to a fully 
  111.    qualified filename that is available to all OS's.
  112.

  114. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  115.  
  116. Symptom:
  117.   During setup, the following error message appears:
  118.  
  119.     "The file OLEAUT32.DLL is out of date. 
  120.     This program requires a newer version."
  121.  
  122. Platform:
  123.   Windows 98 "First Edition"
  124.  
  125. Cause:
  126.   The error message occurs when the version of 
  127.   OLEAUT32.DLL on the computer is older than 
  128.   version 2.40.4275. Certain files critical to the 
  129.   installation process require version 2.40.4275 
  130.   or later.
  131.  
  132. Resolution:
  133. (1) Select OK to the above message. This installs the
  134.     newer version of OLEAUT32.DLL on the computer. 
  135.  
  136. (2) Complete the installation and reboot. The operating
  137.     system must be restarted to update OLEAUT32.DLL
  138.     correctly.
  139.  
  140. (3) Restart Achilles'Shield installation. Achilles'Shield 
  141.     automatically updates itself and completes 
  142.     the installation process normally.
  143.  
  144.   ==========
  145.  
  146. Symptom:
  147.   During setup, the following error message appears
  148.   (where nnn is some number):
  149.  
  150.     "Ordinal nnn could not be located in the 
  151.     dynamic link library MAPI32.DLL."
  152.  
  153. Platform:
  154.   Windows 98/NT
  155.  
  156. Cause:
  157.   Achilles'Shield e-mail client extension requires MAPI32.DLL.
  158.  
  159.   This error may occur if the file MAPI32.DLL installed in
  160.   the System32 directory is not from Microsoft or has been
  161.   altered by some third party software.
  162.  
  163.   Some e-mail/fax software products distribute a 
  164.   specialized version of MAPI32.DLL that is not 100% 
  165.   compatible with the version shipped with 
  166.   Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Office.
  167.  
  168. Resolution:
  169. (1) Determine if the other software product can be
  170.     installed using a version of MAPI that comes from
  171.     Microsoft.
  172.  
  173. (2) Prevent Achilles'Shield from installing the e-mail client
  174.     extension. To do this go to the Achilles'Shield setup 
  175.     directory and edit the file Setup.ini (nb: If Achilles'Shield
  176.     is on a CDROM, copy the setup directory to your HD).
  177.  
  178.     In the section [Options], edit the line:
  179.         DisableEmailClientExtension=N
  180.     to
  181.         DisableEmailClientExtension=Y
  182.  
  183.     Run Achilles'Shield Setup.exe from the directory with the 
  184.     modified Setup.ini.
  185.  
  186.   ==========
  187.  
  188. Symptom:
  189.   After removing macros from an Excel or Word file, and 
  190.   then modifying and saving it with Excel 97 SR2 or 
  191.   Word 97 SR2, you cannot restore the macros. 
  192.  
  193. Platform:
  194.   Windows 98/NT
  195.  
  196. Cause:
  197.   File storage formats changed between different 
  198.   versions of Office applications. Macros can only
  199.   be restored if the file format version does not
  200.   change.
  201.  
  202. Resolution:
  203.   The development team is investigating this problem.
  204.  
  205.   ==========
  206.  
  207. Symptom:
  208.   Removing macros from an Excel 2000 or Word 2000 file, 
  209.   and then modifying and saving it with Excel 2000 
  210.   or Word 2000, you cannot restore the macros with 
  211.   Achilles'Shield.
  212.  
  213. Platform:
  214.   Windows 98/NT
  215.  
  216. Resolution:
  217.   The development team is investigating this problem.
